Feasible sustainable construction

May the 10th 2011

Sustainability and design are an essential element worldwide in construction and urban development of the future. At a conference in June in Denmark a number of interesting examples of how design and sustainability can be incorporated at no extra cost are to be presented. Examples include Design City Kolding, which also hosts the conference.

Future industrialized sustainable construction and urban development is the theme of the conference held on June 7 and 8 at Design City Kolding. The conference will attract numerous Danish and international participants and speakers and is organized by Danish Technological Institute, InnoBYG, Design City Kolding and the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On the basis of concrete examples, the conference does away with the myth that it is more expensive to consider sustainability and good design when erecting modern buildings and neighborhoods. All over the world, sustainability goes hand in hand with a sound economy. Design City Kolding is a good example of this; a new town is created around sustainability, design and new forms of cooperation. The first building, built in energy class 1, will be inaugurated in connection with the conference, and there will be a number of other interesting examples from Denmark, Austria, Holland and China as well.

Network – China and Germany

The conference also kicks-off a project and innovation network on sustainable cities and buildings in China and Germany, known as FISHclusters (Future Sustainable Industrialized Houses). The network is run by, among others Technological Institute.

"FISHclusters will generate growth opportunities for Danish system vendors through thinking sustainable construction in a global context. Specifically, we will create a technology and business platform for joint Danish, Chinese and German development by implementing the Danish knowledge of systems and concepts in a global business and development model. It will all be carried out in collaboration with local companies. Examples could be solar roofs, intelligent façade solutions and CO2 neutral 0-energy buildings," says Anders Thomsen, head of department at the Danish Technological Institute.

Design City Kolding is a natural gathering place for the new network. The building, which is currently planned, will include sustainability all around; the architects are considering e.g. the potential for cooling by groundwater and integration of photovoltaics in the architecture. The buildings are thus also an ideal showcase for the solutions developed through the FISH network.

"Design City Kolding is a place where all businesses, institutions and organizations with a sustainable approach can find their place. The goal is to create a modern, beautiful architectural expression that is also environmentally friendly - even in the long run. We believe that it is attractive to live in sustainable buildings and that it is common sense to build it," says Thomas Nielsen, managing director of Design City Kolding.
